Job Fair, Part 2...
Yesterday, I drove down to Austin for the Recruit Military Job Fair that was held on the campus of the University of Texas-Austin at the Erwin Center (the basketball stadium).
I didn't really know what to expect prior to leaving my apartment. In fact, I almost decided not to go at the last second. However, I changed my mind, thinking it would be a good experience to just go there anyway.
It was OK. Just OK. There wasn't anything too special or notable.
As far as job fairs go, this one was smaller than the one at Fort Hood on Wednesday. I walked around a few times. I talked to several HR (human resources) people from companies like SAIC, State Farm, DynCorp, TXU, New England Financial, and a couple of others. I meant to talk to the woman representing New York Life, but I didn't. I don't know why. I guess I was just tired and hungry, so I left before talking to her.
I did have a good conversation with a representative from the Texas Veterans Commission. She agreed with my observation that there does seem to be a de facto two tier system for military veterans who are looking for a new job. What I mean is that there is one tier for officers and a second tier for enlisted personnel. From what I can gather, just about every recruiter and job placement firm wants to meet and place officers, no matter what their branch or specialty. On the other hand, there aren't too many recruiters and job placement firms who want to meet enlisted people unless you had a technical MOS. Basically, if you aren't an officer or have a technical skill, these high-flying HR people consider you to be a moron.
When you are an enlisted intelligence analyst, it can be pretty lonely. There aren't too many people who want to talk to you. Everyone just seems to assume that you want to have a position with a federal intelligence agency. Maybe. Maybe not. It depends.
Case in point has been my experience with the recruiting firm of Bradley Morris. I got a phone call a day or two right after I registered with their website. After that, I got a few e-mails. Once they found out that I wasn't an officer, it is as though their interest cooled.
I did go by the Bradley Morris table when I attended the Fort Hood Job Fair back on Wednesday. I had a good conversation with the recruiter whom I had spoken with on the phone and had received a couple of e-mails from about the difficulties of looking for work. That was about it.
On the other hand, I will say that woman recruiter from Bradley Morris who was at the Fort Hood Job Fair was pretty damn HOT!!! She was about, say, 5 feet 7 inches tall, had long dark brown/black hair, black eyes, and a light olive complexion. She wore a killer navy blue pinstripe suit with pants that showed off her awesome body. You could tell that she exercises on a routine basis. I made sure that I made several passes-by to steal a quick look of her before she left for lunch. I'd rate her a 10. Definitely.
Another highlight of the Fort Hood Job Fair was the recruiter from the Cedar Park, Texas Police Department. (Cedar Park is a suburb/small town northwest of Austin.) She was a very fit blonde with brown eyes who was about 5 feet 6 inches tall. She also looked really good with her uniform and collar length hair. Unfortunately, I'm not looking to be a police officer, but I should have gone over just to listen to what she had to say. I'd rate her at about a 9.5. She wasn't as good looking as Ms. Williams, but it was close.
Getting back to the job fair in Austin yesterday, there just wasn't any woman that was as memorable as those two were. So much for looking at beautiful women as I walk around and pretend to be interested in looking at employment displays.
The next time I see a beautiful woman at a job fair, I think I'll try out these lines.
"Kiss me, I'm unemployed."
OR
"Let's go have some lunch, and you can proofread my resume."
There were a couple more lines I thought of while I was driving back to Killeen yesterday, but I can't seem to remember them. They were pretty darn funny, though.
hehe, seems that you enjoying your journey to the Fair :p
